Digging into why songs matter...
I started this podcast mistakenly. I was in a course where I was supposed to start a podcast about being a podcast manager. But, oops, I started one about my passion, music! It is the best mistake I've made!
Through all the interviews I have gained such an appreciation for music, the creation process, and how music really affects people. My guests pick a song they have strong memories associated with. Now I remember what they shared when I hear the songs we discussed.
Melissa Loggins is a music teacher who finds deep inspiration in “Hall of Fame” by The Script. Her aim is to encourage students to follow their dreams and build the confidence to perform through rock band camps. The song became significant to Melissa when she used it during a rock camp some years back. Its message hit home, providing both guidance and motivation for her students. Understanding the power of lyrics, Melissa emphasized the importance of learning the song’s message. "You can be the greatest, you can be the best." “Hall of Fame” inspires listeners to aim high and move forward, echoing her mission to help students grow one step at a time.
Melissa runs a rock camp that’s all about teamwork and learning. At camp, budding musicians arrive without knowing their bandmates or song list. Once divided into bands, they learn several songs over a week, while getting a taste of what it’s like to be in a band. One year that included “Hall of Fame.” In 2014, the camp focused on songs that inspire. Choosing “Hall of Fame” marked a first for Melissa and her husband to use a song from their typical genres.
“Hall of Fame,” featuring Will.I.Am, by The Script, is about reaching greatness for the right reasons. Don't strive to become famous for the sake of being famous. Written by Danny O'Donoghue, it encourages people to work hard not just for fame but to truly make a difference. Released in August 2012, the song became a motivational hit, making its way into movies, TV shows, and sports events.
Throughout camp, Melissa saw how “Hall of Fame” influenced the students. One memorable moment involved a young keyboard player who realized how he could fit into rock music. This experience underlines how music can change perceptions and expand interests. Kids from 11 to 18 attended the camp, and find the courage to perform, facing their stage fears. Melissa’s joy was clear when her students performed the song, growing in both skill and bravery.
At Music Authority, where Melissa teaches, the goal is to show students they can have fulfilling music careers without being famous. The school helps young artists by giving them a place to learn and connect. Some students have even gone on to impressive paths like college music programs and big performances, including auditions for shows like American Idol.
Melissa's commitment to guiding young musicians to find their own success is clear.
