Digging into why songs matter...
I started this podcast mistakenly. I was in a course where I was supposed to start a podcast about being a podcast manager. But, oops, I started one about my passion, music! It is the best mistake I've made!
Through all the interviews I have gained such an appreciation for music, the creation process, and how music really affects people. My guests pick a song they have strong memories associated with. Now I remember what they shared when I hear the songs we discussed.
I had a heartfelt discussion with Hashondra, sharing the unique tale behind an original song that holds deep significance in her life: "Freedom."
Hashondra's story begins at a young age. She recalls being an entertainer from the moment she could express herself. Her grandfather affectionately nicknamed her “Sunny,” noticing her bright and energetic personality. Music was a constant presence in her life, with influences like gospel, blues, and country soundtracks that filled her upbringing. A memory that stands out is when young Hashondra sang at her uncle's funeral — marking her first public performance. As she grew, her passion for music was nurtured by her family, whom she refers to as her “village.” Family road trips from Georgia to Philadelphia became vocal showcases as she sang in the car, building her confidence in performing in front of others.
Despite not participating in formal choir during high school, Hashondra always found ways to incorporate music into her life. Whether it was through church choir performances, community showcases, or even at karaoke nights, her dedication to singing never waned. Music became her refuge, a therapeutic outlet she turned to, especially on challenging days.
Hashondra’s journey through an unhealthy marriage and subsequent divorce is pivotal in understanding the song "Freedom." Written during a period of profound personal turmoil, the song encapsulates her yearning to reclaim her identity and feel liberated. The concept of freedom, for Hashondra, is the days in the past when you didn't have many responsibilities, the carefree days of youth. Hashondra describes the creation of "Freedom" as a spontaneous freestyle session in her bathroom. The song emerged organically, raw and unfiltered, capturing her emotions and desire for freedom, freedom from herself and circumstances.
The song reflects on themes of self-discovery and confronting personal challenges. Hashondra shares a powerful line from "Freedom" — a desire to be free from her own doubts and insecurities, understanding the importance of self-accountability. Hashondra recounts an encounter with someone who set the song as their ringtone, finding strength and inspiration in its message. Such interactions affirm the song’s impact, echoing its empowering narrative of breaking free from ones circumstances.
Hashondra's musical journey is ongoing. While she initially recorded "Freedom" in its raw form, she's now collaborating with an acoustic guitarist to create a more polished version, allowing its message to shine even brighter. This endeavor aligns with her broader mission to share her music, not for fame, but for personal fulfillment and helping others reach breakthrough.
Hashondra speaks lovingly of her children, who have grown up witnessing her love for music. Her daughters, each embracing creative endeavors, reflect their mother’s passion. She encourages her daughters to "release it through the pen" meaning put words on paper. And through that process to Release, Relax, and Receive. Music in their household is not just an art form, but a medium for expression and healing. Hashondra’s legacy is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of music.
Hashondra’s story serves as a reminder that music is a universal language of healing, celebration, and storytelling. Whether it’s in a bustling karaoke bar or the solitude of a bathroom, the power of song prevails, inviting us all to participate in its beauty.
